Two nights ago I was getting ready to sleep and went tobrush my teeth. no water. It's very cold here...but I knew the water wasn't frozen because I could hear the rads filling up. I ran around and checked all the taps. No water. Uh oh. This immediately woke me up so I found a water pitcher in the fridge and made some tea. Do I phone the landlord? I needed to think about this. I watched some Law and Order and then checked the taps again. no water. Helicopters. I swear I could hear helicopters right over our apartment. I left notes for Stagg that water was out and fell asleep about
5a.m. A few minutes later Stagg woke up and water was restored...
This is what happened on our street:
By 10 a.m. we got an automated phone message explaining the street would be closed for at least a week. The helicopters were news teams. I was pretty impressed with the automated phone messages all morning...but it was amazing that under the circumstances the water was restored within four hours...

Wow that was alot of water. If the street it closed how do you get in and out if you need to?? I would be more worried about needing somethign in that time frame than anything else. Well glad its all restored for you.
Hi Tweety...closed for traffic I should have said...the El train and sidewalks are somewhat usable. I feel bad for the local businesses two of which are major hangouts for us...they are closed and the wait staff will be losing money that is not replaceable.
there is ahole in the street about a block long...trees fell into it and so did a car or two!
That is beautiful footage. But, ahem, how did you manage not to notice?
Unless of course you are totally like me and could probably walk around with an arrow or a fencepost stuck in your head and not notice until someone finally says something. (I love that sort of news story because it could happen to me)
L.M. I know I love that footage too...there is a second part where you see the car go into the 80 foot wide vortex...it was between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. and I could hear stuff going on but looking down the side of my building and the alley I couldn't see details. Trust me I knew something was up because there were at least 3 helicopters.
I wasn't going outside in Chicago by myself at 3 a.m. :(
If I could have woken up Stagg I would have but he blissfully slept through the apocalypse.
:)
Yikes! That's arc-building levels of water...
Hey Candy - I'm passing an award on to you, but you must visit http://wyliekinson.blogspot.com to pick it up.
:)
Holy! Glad you guys are ok - hope no-one was sleeping on the stret that night! Yikes!
xx tuffy
You were wise, Candy, I tend to forget that not everyone has a 110 lb. dog to escort them at night.
My beast probably wouldn't stop a bullet, but he's made me damn cocky and damn mobile.
thats nowt! try this...
watch out for that bin!
down the road fro where i work!
people have only just sorted themselves out from last year, and it's starting again!
Where did all that water come from? Rain? Or a burst water main? Yikes!
nothing like a little excitement in the neighbourhood!
Ugh, what a mess... glad they could get the water restored so fast. But the full damage will take lots longer to clean up...
Oh wow. That is just terrible. Hope they get it fixed soon where those waitresses can have there money coming back in.
We had one of those in London just recently. A huge sink hole right around Christmas, sunk the downtown for like blocks. INSANE!!!
About a week ago our street was flooded like that too. Luckily on my street I'm on a hill, so it didn't affect my house.
Holy crap! That's crazy. Glad to know that you guys are ok. Too bad about the local businesses though...hopefully their insurance will be able to help them with any losses.
thats crazy!..
you were talking helicopters so I was thinking about when I lived in Los Angeles..so i thought you'd show vids of a riot or something..
all that water..thats just amazing
that's awesome. we lost water in my town recently and everyone in the coffeeshop nearly shit themselves -- literally, they closed the bathroom and everyone had to go. but there was no flood. aside from their capacity to cause cataclysmic property damage and kill people i've always thought floods were really cool.
Don't you see what's going on here? Stagg's asleep, no water; Stagg's awake, there's water. He's some kind of freakin' water god, for Chrissakes! He's a keeper, Candy. Don't let him go!
I saw this on the news, but had no idea that it was this noisy. How freaky is it that the streets are filled with water and your faucets are dry? Glad your household is OK.
