Goddesses of a Sort-13 Favourite Female Supermodels

“I never believed in the goddess thing,”says Ines de la Fressange, about her emergence as one of France’s legendary beauties. Ines de la Fressange is really one of amy all time favourite models...classic beauty and wonderful contemporary urban style and attitude. She makes a perfume but I haven't checked it out...I must try to remember that...

"Supermodels are the goddesses of our time" Camille Paglia.

"Money, power, respect; supermodels are the Greek goddesses of our time, if you want to believe Camille Paglia." Dr. Olivet on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.

It is no accident that two major female characters on Law and Order have names referencing the olive tree...Dr. Olivet and Olivia Benson...conjure up the greek goddess of wisdom Athena. Athena gave us the first Olive Tree. All around us are signs that Paganism has never died away or been legislated out of our daily lives. Supermodels posing haughty and aloof on magazines are evidence of the power and need for humans to worship female energies.

There was a time when kids and young people lined up when a new movie was released featuring pop music. Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Woodstock and many others long before MTV arrived drew fans. The invention of MTV and videos was a force of nature for music lovers. Now our artists like The Cars, Michael jackson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Public Image LTd, Bauhaus came into our homes and reflected our passion for music and clothes and art. Worship of the body and face with soundtrack became "normal".

I was not a fan of the band "Wham" it was too lite and bubblegummy for my punk tastes at the time...but later when George Michaels went solo...it was a time when certain musicians could create a scandal with their videos. It used to be that vj's would announce when a new video was going to be released and critics would respond...and fans would sit by the tv and wait for it's premiere run. Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson were known for their provocative images and lyrics. To my surprise at the time
George Michaels released a solo album and his single on video became a scandal. He wasn't IN HIS OWN VIDEO! HE BURNED ICONIC LEATHER JACKET! Rumours abounded that he was ill, dying, had snubbed the record companies. In fact, the video Freedom which featured several supermodels lipsyncing was a surprisingly spiritual event. The artist had removed himself from the cult of personality and the lyrics Freedom seemed to mirror the Buddhist idea of letting go of identity or ego, and replacing it with gorgeous but superficial icons of female form...using supermodels seemed to "mean" something in the video. In fact, part of the mystique unique to supermodels is that they don't speak. Their lack of voices is part of what makes they seem otherworldly. Their lipsyncing in the video adds to this mystique somehow...In many ways Michaels had snubbed the corporate world of recordmaking: they couldn't use him to sell his single. It seems hilarious now that critics freaked out and the video made such a startling debut. The video featured Christy Turlington, Linda Evangeslista, Naomi Campbell, Tatiana Patitz and Cindy Crawford. The male models are: Mario Serrenti, John Pearson and Peter Formby.

I liked Linda Evangelista because she was one of the few supermodels who smiled.

When Linda Evangelista mentioned to Vogue that "we don’t wake up for less than $10,000 a day," she may have been playfully pretending the role of an up-scale union representative, yet that 1990 comment became the most notorious quote in modeling history. In 1991, Christy Turlington signed a contract with Maybelline that paid her $800,000 for twelve days' work each year. Four years later, Claudia Schiffer reportedly earned $12 million for her various modeling assignments.[20] Authorities ranging from Karl Lagerfeld to Time had declared the supermodels more glamorous than movie stars.

Lisa Fonssagrives once described herself as a "good clothes hanger". I like her because she seems like a forerunner of the Hitchcock blonde. She was the first person on the cover of the first Vanity Fair...and I love Vanity Fair

I love Karen Elson...

Karen Elson is hooked up with Jack White of The Racontuers and White Stripes.

Iman always rocks my world...and she's cool, well spoken and well...with David Bowie!

Niki Taylor is just cool. She is a fantastic host and judge of "Make Me A Supermodel" and I fell for her when she was fighting back tears at the season finale, she really seemed motherly to the models. Also, she rocks because she was unconscious for six weeks after a car accident in 2001 and recovered.

Edie Sedgewick. Models are nothing if not the embodiment of the mysterious idea of a muse. Edie was Andy Warhol's muse for a brief time before her early death but she has remainded a legend. She is also a cousin to Kyra Sedgewick...star of The Closer I love Kyra!

This picture says everything about the magic of Twiggy.

Shalom Harlow...just her name is unearthly and goddesslike!
Birthday: Dec. 5, 1973
Birthplace: Oshawa, Ontario, Canada
Height: 5' 11"
Eyes: Blue

-Discovered at a Cure concert in Toronto at age 16

-Victoria's Secret lingerie
-Appeared in Pirelli Calendar

Gisele, I just like her, she's feisty.

I wasn't a fan of Kate Moss for years. Then two things happened. She went blonde and I suddenly went wow she looks cool. she had always seemed kind of preppy to me before. Then when she was shown in photos suggesting she was doing drugs...she never ever went on the news and apologized crying repenting...or said anything...she totally ignored the tabloids. I thought that was brilliant.

Moss has appeared in music videos such as "Kowalski" by Primal Scream, "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" by the White Stripes, "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" by Elton John, "Sex with Strangers" by Marianne Faithfull and "Delia's Gone" and "God's Gonna Cut You Down" by Johnny Cash.

She also provided vocals for songs by Primal Scream (the 2003 version of "Some Velvet Morning") and Babyshambles. Her vocals are featured on the Babyshambles' song "La Belle et la Bête", singing the lines "Is she more beautiful than me?". Prior to breaking up with Pete Doherty, Moss co-wrote four songs on Babyshambles' second album Shotter's Nation—"You Talk", "French Dog Blues", "Baddie's Boogie", and "Deft Left Hand".

Moss has also DJ'd on more than one occasion at the Death Disco club with her friends Alan McGee and BP Fallon.

Moss is also known for her close friendships with many rock and roll icons and musicians such as Elton John, Mick Jones, Anita Pallenberg, Marianne Faithfull, Bobby Gillespie and Siobhan Fahey.

In 1999, Moss played a non-musical role in the British television comedy Blackadder: Back & Forth, appearing both as Maid Marian and as a fictional queen of England. (From Wikipedia.)

Heidi Klum because she created and produced Project Runway which I absolutely adore and am addicted to. Heidi Klum is also funny, strong, opinionated and in fact, she kind of intimidates me just a little and I like that! It's her serious German accent puts me on edge...when she doesn't like something she doesn't suffer fools. She is also married to the wonderful Seal, who on Oprah shared one of his mottos: "happy wife, happy life". Project Runway has highlighted the talents of hundreds of artists and the craft and design of making clothes...and for that, she rocks it!

The video "Freedom" was directed by David Fincher (Vogue, Aliens3, Fight Club, Se7en, Panic Room, Zodiac)

What a fun post - Yes, the super models are goddesses - some of them - you've chosen well. Egad after this post I'm wondering if I might be "Bi." :)

Everyone claims to have been the first supermodel, but the very first model I ever saw a young child was Twiggy. She still stands as my barometer of what it takes to be a supermodel. Wonderful post, cool pics.

So happy to see Twiggy and Edie Sedgwick! That's the era I grew up in. All gamine hair and LASHES! Also, I'm a huge fan of SVU but never caught the "olive" tie. (Thanks for visiting my TT)

I do not know any of them.

Gosh, that's a very interesting post. I am so out of that whole world... I don't really know anything about it, but I do know the faces. I don't like Giselle very much. Well, I should say that I think her boyfriend stinks, so I make the automatic assumption she must also. The idea that she now cares for the child her pig boyfriend didn't want, dumped his former because she wouldn't abort.... Anyway, she's not that fiesty. If she was, she'd dump him.... but that's my rant for the day! ;)

I have never heard of 3/4 of these, and I pay little attention to the supermodel scene -- generally I regard them as grossly overpaid for what little they do, but there are some I do admire. And I have had a thing for Iman for years. What has Bowie got that I haven't (apart from fame, money, talent)?

I don't get the whole supermodel thing. They all are funny looking to me. Happy TT.

Totally fascinating. I enjoyed your sharing of one of your passions with us! The first model, Ines de la Fressange is completely gorgeous. Iman's my other favorite. As a big fan of dance, I've always loved the movement of models down the runway. No wonder they call it the catwalk - they stalk it with the power of the Big Cats.

Karen Elson... well, she's a redhead, so she rocks, of course! ;)

But where is Heidi Klum? She's gorgeous and so very very funny! She was on Conan one night and she totally sparred with him, which cannot be easy! Plus, she is with Seal, and they make one awesome-looking couple!

Gardenia, we live in a society that now declares if we adore the body of a same sex we must be gay or bi. Sexual orientation is a spectrum and it's completely natural to admire and enjoy the human body. If we look at some contemporary art we can see a return to the body and figurative work. I love women's bodys and forms, the shape of their hips and breasts, how clothes fit or don't fit...I love movies and videos that focus on the face so we can look at eyes. One current theory is that looking at the head and face of other (primates) humans can affect our sleep habits...we NEED to enjoy the human form for our health!

Pjazzypar, I think Twiggy is such a good example of the "otherworldy" that interests us all about models and the human form. I love her too. Glad you enjoyed this post.

The Gal Herself, Edie was something, she still haunts our cutlture...the tragic beauty. Perhaps the most like a Greek Goddess? Did you see the recent SVU? Olivia had to get naked in a prison....it was so tense I was on edge the entire episode!

Chelle Y. well I shall to do a post on actresses who are goddesses in the future.

On A Limb With Claudia, you know I know very little about the actual lives of the models...I was referring to Gisele's attitude in interviews and her energy. You have convinced me she may also represent the kind of Greek Goddess like Medea...only let's hope not!

Nicholas, Yes the combo of Bowie and Iman is a enticing one isn't it? What a glorious magical image they make together! I know you are far too busy reading to take notice of girls in fashion and I admire you for that. I have a pop culture fetish no doubt!

Pussreboots, how refreshing! You know, in many ways supermodels are "funny looking" that is what makes them seem exotic.

Julia Smith, I am nuts for Ines...her dark hair, her sense of absolute poise and beauty! I love runway walking...I would love to go to a famous designer runway show some day...I have been at many local and night club fashion shows though. There are some terrific docs on fashion including two on Karl Lagerfeild and one on Yves St Laurant that I highly recommend. Fashion really is one of the arts!

Red, clever you...if you noticed...I actually only planned up putting 11 models in this post! It took me a very long time to work on this post yesterday and I was late for TT almost. I had Heidi Klum in my list and Kate Moss actually. I completely forgot about them as I was exhausted after being online for two hours, ha! I wanted to add Heidi because I adore her program Project Runway...and I will add her sometime today! You can see I just kind of trailed off with a whimper when I wrote about Gisele...and didn't get back to writing ha! I shall amend shortly...

Sorry I'm late in stopping by! Fascinating post, as always. Supermodels as goddesses--it's an interesting concept. They do appear rather otherworldly: not so much the epitome of the feminine (IMO, they'd need more curves for that), but rather an almost symbolic representation of it. Obviously, I'm only referring to their appearance--I don't know anything about them as people.

Candy Minx said...

Hi Darla, yes I think that is the secret about supermodels that they symbolically represent the female form and beauty. That's it completely YES! I don't know much about their life either...and I think that adds to their ability to be representative. I am sure that is aprtly why Kate Moss did not lower herself to addressing tabloid rumours of her life. Models shouldn't speak too much...and I mean that in an artist way not as silencing them as such. I remember when Christy Turlingtom did an ad on tv and she says "hello LA" and everyt time I heard her voice I laughed becuase it sounded wrong somehow...perhaps they are all a little like Cassandra who spoke but no one could hear her....?

Wow some of them are very beautiful and others it made me wonder really how they got the job in the first place. Some are so awfully tall.

Anonymous said...

Wow, what a fun list -- and I learned a lot, as I always do from your lists!

Some of them I had heard of, others I hadn't. I've never heard of Shalom Harlow; she's lovely!

Interesting T13! I envision Goddesses a bit differently though, more lushly curved and more like the Goddesses of old.

Like Gaia, Cerridwen, Brigid, and Astarte. Of course, I am probably dating myself, huh? LOL.

So when I think of supermodels as Goddesses, I think of women like Emme, Kate Dillon, Charlotte Coyle, Toccara Jones, Carre Otis, and Barbara Brickner.

Full of form and healthy vitality despite what "society" deems their overabundant size, comfortable in their own skin and not afraid to flaunt their beauty.

Just an observation for what it's worth. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. :)

After I'd finished drooling on my keyboard I suddenly realised you'd used the word 'spiritual' to describe a George Michael video.

Bloody hell! Can I have some of your good stuff then? aw go on... ;-)

Candy Minx said...

Tweetey, yes they are tall. It's kind of surprising when we see a tall supermodel next to a mere mortal...they really are tall. And they are sometimes "odd" shaped...part of the otherworldiness I guess.

ThommaLyn, I like Shalom she is a little edgy...and Canadian! She has been in a couple of movies too "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days."

Anonymous, I love Astare and the other goddesses you mention too. I realize that perhaps the models I chose maybe off-putting because they are so thin. I love curvy volumptuous women too...heck I am a huge Madonna and Marilyn fan! I loved Anna Nicole Smith for her looks and Jayne Mansfeild and Rosalind Russle. I like all types of bodies...but the models that came to mind for me in this post happened to be rather skinny. Ha! Various cultures perceptions of size and feritility and beauty is always changing and also...not written in stoen. I like Carrie Otis, heck she was hooked up with Mickey Rourke which was good enough from me!

Jihad Punk, howdy...glad you enjoyd the pics. The reason I believe the George Michaels video "Freedom" was spiritual was because he attempted to remove an aspect of his identity...or ego...from the visuals. He burns his leather coat which is also a symbolic act of deliverance or surrender...at least in my opinion. The entire album with songs liek "Father Figure" and "Faith" are mythical to me and harken to spiritual concepts, for better or worse, maybe he failed but he did seem to be going in a deeper direction. I kind of think all pop music is spiritual because the lyrics are often about love and the heart.

I refuse to believe goddess/female energy must come in such thin packages.

Candy Minx said...

Heh heh...Alice, Goddessses come in all shapes and sizes. I didn't intend to suggest that there was only one goddess image in our contemporay world. After all...there is the GREAT Domestic Goddess, Roseanne...who I adore! I have several posts over the past two years that explore the many manifestations of goddesses.

Malcolm said...

I remember the first time I saw Niki Taylor and thinking how gorgeous she was... I am glad that nothing has changed. Kate Moss and Giselle never have done much for me, esp. Kate... too damned skinny. As for Ms. Klum, that Seal is one lucky man.

What an awesome post! I have to admit, I've always been a bit envious of models and how good they look. But I'm quite happy with myself and that's all that really matters.

Hon, I emailed you. Let me know if you didn't get it!
