Pop Stars and Sunglasses

1) Bleeding Gums Murphy knows a pop star needs to wear shades...money is no object...

2) Elton John owned thousands of sunglasses.

3) John Lennon's sunglasses would be about $225.00 today by Cartier.

4) Grace Jones Jones's use of sunglasses also calls for analysis. Her shades function as a general reference to the popular celebrity ritual practice of deflecting an intrusive gaze while increasing one's glamour quotient. They also refer to the ubiquitous presence of sunglasses worn by performers throughout African and African diaspora cultures.

5) Kool Moe Dee are Swatch designer glasses, I believe, and they are about $400.00

6) Ray Charles often wore designer glasses by Ray Ban...they are Wayfarers and would be about $250.00 retail today.

7) Joey Ramone in Ray Ban Wayfarers

8) Bob Dylan wears the same Ray Ban designer glasses as Ray Charles, Joey Ramone (and Tom Cruise in Risky Business) today $250.00. In his Cadallac commercial, Dylan is wearing Ray Ban Aviator sunglasses $300.00.

9) Janis Joplin wore RAYEX switchable sunglasses, they came with 8 different lenses in different colours. About $60.00 second hand.

10) Thelonius Monk.

11) I don't know what kind of galsses Bootsy Collins is wearing because I think they are from Jupiter.

12) Roy Orbison also wore Ray Ban Wayfarers, although, I'm not sure these are such in this pic.

13) Bono gets some flak for spending money on sunglasses (while saving the world) but he is part of an expensive tradition, Bulgari sunglasses, $300.

For people who say howdy...I'll link your blog here:

This is a great collection of shades wearers. It was cool to see Bootsy Collins make your list. That pic you chose of Janis Joplin is my favorite of her. I had that album on cassette years ago.

I like Bono's shades. Makes him look young

HEE! What a cool list of shades and folks wearing them! Like Malcolm, I especially liked the photo of Janis Joplin. That's a wonderful picture of her.

Those are some cool folks wearing those shades!

This was a list as cool as the people on it. It was great to see the pic of Janis Joplin and to read about the shades she wore. The fact that they came with 8 different lenses seems perfectly suited to all I've heard of her and her search for everything inside of her.

So glad I swung by this week.

Happy TT

Cheapskate rock stars! Mine cost £220 ($440) and are by Giorgio Armani (not Emporio Armani, perish the thought). Money is no object when you spend as much time in Italy as I do. Gotta have the right shades!

OMG! Look at Janis Joplin's big sunglasses! Hehehe! I used to own a pair like that. Gosh, and here I thought I looked cool in them... NOT! I have my T13 up now. Heh!

Happy T13!

Well, this is a cool idea for TT. I love it. Have a great TT. :)

great entry. I own dozens of sunglasses, some pretty cheesy.

I am a shades wearer and my wardrobe for the day isn't complete without my classic Gucci pair. I have other glasses as well of different colors and sizes but there's only one right now that I prefer to use all the time.

Thanks for dropping by and I'll have my TT up later :)

Happy Thursday!

What a clever list! I'm surprised you didn't show some of Elton John's wilder shades, though. ;-)

Interesting TT I always think someone is hiding when they wear sunglasses other than driving or being in the sun.

Yours is without a doubt the coolest TT I've seen this week! (Especially because I'm a sunglassaholic.) Thanks for stopping by my TT.

I really enjoyed your TT. Mine is my week in review. Hapy TT.

What a fun list. It cracks me up that the bug sunglasses are so popular now. When I was a kid, the only people who wore them were post-face lift surgery folks.

Happy TT

I've never worn sunglasses!

I watched a documentary about film making the other day where they mentioned that actors who are going to fire guns wear sun glasses not because they look cool but because it hides them flinching when they shoot which looks uncool. Now my brain has warped that to wonder what it is that makes rock stars flinch so they need to wear glasses too...

Great TT :-)

corey hart wore sunglasses at night but he wasn't cool at all he sucked dog dingus.

That's a cool TT. I always wonder why musicians wer sunglasses, apart from affectation (Ray Charles not incuded of course).

Gees, I forgot it was Thursday. Fun post though - I really enjoyed it - I'm sort of a glasses freak - I would own dozens if I could afford it....all shapes, sizes......

Looks like Ray Ban is the big winner on the rock star front, eh? For a while, I thought Bonos sunglasses were irritating, but I realized that it wasn't the sunglasses, but a strong if irrational aversion to Bono , with or without sunglasses, that was at issue.

Bootsy is way groovy in that pic, baby.

300 bucks for sunglasses? i can't help seeing that as the equivalent of 10 full priced hardback books or 30 paperbacks or 60 second hand paperbacks... guess i just value different things. i can't imagine spending that much for a pair of sunglasses!! but on the other hand, though i've never been in a position to do so, i can imagine spending 300 dollars in one bookstore visit. I swoon at the thought. even knowing that most of the people in my life would consider that as ridiculous as I consider 300 *gasp* dollars for sunglasses!

thanx for this new tidbit of culture insight though. I confess i've been bamboozled by the pics of celebs in sunglasses, thinking how snazzy, jazzy or cooool they looked. but a glance over those pics after seeing those prices and all i see are clowns.

but you can probably just chalk up this snarky attitude to my being a sleep-deprived NaNo nutter. i'm irritable as a teased cat right now. (yes i read the whole page before commenting here)

ah, but this has given me an idea... there is a character in my story(supporting cast not POV) who needs to have a pair of these shades. maybe a wardrobe of them. 'cause he's such a coool customer and has a whole lot of people bamboozled. esp one fool(ish) young undergrad.

Janis Joplin was so awesome . When I was a little one my mom looked just like her. Wow those were the days. I am showing my age now.

Thanks for visiting my symbols TT.

You can't beat a good pair of Ray Bans. They are such a classic, iconic image... I'd love me a pair.

Cool idea for a TT!

Candy Minx said...

Wow, thanks guys, I loved hearing all the perspectives on sunglasses!

I live in sunglasses, I have several pair at any given time, often one on my head and one in my purse.

I'm an absolute mole in sunlight...have no light resistence at all.

p.s. and I listen to every performer in this list ...yeah I know I am crazy for music and have very broad tastes.

I'm with Mister Anchovy on the Bono front, but then you already knew that!

Candy Minx said...

Yeah yeah yeah...I know everybody hates Bono...

Except for me and Johnny Cash.

I have a weakness for Bono too. But then, I have a weakness for pop music, so what can I say.

Great post Candy.

Oh, and I loved the cadillac comercial...
Funny, we've been listening to the theme time radio show since the summer...the kids love it, especially driving - they'll say Play Shorty Long!!! or start singing "the devil ain't lazy, no sireee"

er, am i going to prove my ignorance in pointing out that ray charles was blind, therefore they weren't strictly "sunglasses" in the traditional sense? were they? or am i just a fat doofus?

and i concur with the whole bono thing. make him pope, get it over with!

heyyyy there... I've got a fave dead celeb's party for NYE, i heart janice and would love to find some of those raytex switchables (i did already google my brains out), i see you say second hand about 60 bucks, would you know where i might be able to find those at all?

I know this is a very old post...but A correction about #9...Janis Joplin wore Foster Grant's Sunglasses, usually the frame-less type. In her last interview with Dick Cavett, she actually looks right into the camera and asks Foster Grant to send her a case of the Purple Sunglasses.
