Music Mashups

Flyer for Bootie, the first bootleg mashup club in the United States, launched in San Francisco in 2003.

I am addicted to mashups. I pretty much only play mashups when I've got iTunes going in the studio and house. We have a few mashup cds and I always look around on the internet for more mashups.

A mashup is a song or composition created by blending two or more songs, usually by overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the music track of another.

Here is a really good mashup with John Cougar Mellancamp and 50 Cent.

And here is a really smooth very effective mashup of Jimi Hendrix and Snoop Dogg...I LOVE it!

I was looking for the mashup of Steppenwolf and Madonna...and I found this whack video. someone calls it the worst video ever, but I thought it was really funny.

No images here but this is an awesome mashup of Wu Tang Clan and Johnny Cash.

geez, I can hardly cope with one song at a time. I guess a mash-up is kind of like a "round" for the new century. I always got all mixed up when we had to sing those in public school. I was always singing the row row row part when I should have been on the merrily merrily merrily part.

To be fair, though, I haven't listened to very many of these things. I can see why they would be popular though.

not a great fan meself. If I love a Bowie song - or whoever - I don't want it messed with.

I must be an old fart I suppose...

Mister Anchovy, yeah, I think these songs were genetically created for someone like me. Or vice versa. They totally satisfy my ADHD. I get mad love for them. Also, they are usually all about the dance..really good beyond loud at a nightclub.

4 Dinners, there are some really good Bowie mashups. But I know, it's personal taste. I find them exhilarating for some reason. That is funny about the word verification. (I have a lot of trouble with word verification usually have to do it several time over...)

Gee, thanks Beej. You know in a way these mashups remind me of when djs on the radio used to find songs that had similar melodies...and I mean way back in the 80's. They would play them next to each other and discuss the dates the songs were written. I think it's also kind of funny because sometimes a lawsuit arises when someone writes a song and it sounds like they have stolen a riff. There was even a lawsuit at George harrison. I forgot what song but someone sued because he allegedly ripped off a riff. These mashups...to me...are really cool because they are the very act of a kind of "universal" connection between genres and forms. I wonder what Carl Jung would think of mashups?

Speaking of Jung, Candy, I picked up a copy of 'Memories, Dreams, Reflections' today. I won't be starting it yet but lert me know when you're ready to read it.

After I finish it, I will let you know what I think he would think of mashups.

Have you taken ever taken his personality test? According to him, I'm a total sentimental mess. Hahahaa!1 How dead on is that, mama??
