One Ballot, Two Votes

What do you think of electoral reform?

The idea is that on one ballot a voter could pick a political party...plus a candidate...and they don't have to be of the same political party?

I just heard about this from a fellow passenger on th4e streetcar this morning and we are having a referedum vote ina month on this issue...

Electoral Reform
A little bit more

I don't know particularly about Ontario, but the US sorely needs electoral reform.

The two votes--one for a party and one for a candidate--has some appeal, though I'd like to see how it would work in real life.

What I really dislike is the all-or-nothing election results. It in effect disenfranchises anyone who doesn't want to vote for one of the major parties.

I have to admit I have never voted in my life. But it sounds interesting for those that have voted and will vote this coming year.

I think the idea is to put in place a form of proportional representation....so that you don't have a situation where a party has the most number of seats but not the most number of votes overall. The system proposed, with local members and list members seems more complex than I'd like to see, but I think it is worth thinking about. I have not decided how to vote in the referendum yet.

Anybody who expresses an interest in going into politics should immediately receive a lifetime ban from ever doing so.

One vote? Two votes? Doesn't matter.

Corruption killed democracy years ago.

Darla, I wonder how such a ballot and voting reform would help in America. I think because it's basically a two party result from most American elections...the country might see more representation from a party like the Green Party with a two vote ballot. From what I've heard and asked peeople in OntARIO..most people have not heard about this referendum coming up in October and to pass...it needs 60% support...so we'll see...

Tweety...YOUR VOTE COUNTS! But you gave me a bit of a chuckle because I am aware that a lot of people just don't feel voting makes a difference and that is both sad and a valuable insight into elections isn't it? I am glad you shared your situation though...gives me a lot to think about in democracy and the feelings of many folks.

Mister Anchovy...I am still thinking about this referendum...and I kind of like it. Again, the Green Party in Canada would likely get at least one or two seats in parliment and that would be a healthy change I think with this kind of electoral change. David was very supportive of it...but he doesn't think ther eis enough awareness or people who will actually go and vote on this referendum in October.

Four Dinners...I have no patience for politics or politicians...and I agree anyone who wants to be a politician should be barred from such...I think we might consider hiring people from out of the phone book to be socal assistants and fulfill the chores of looking after the city structures of garbage pick up...street repairs etc...we don't need politicians to have so much power.
