For Mister Anchovy

Amy Winehouse's satelite Grammy performance...she has "it" and I love her backup singers/dancers...

She's good. I have never heard of her before but she is good. Thanks for sharing.

I watched this with the volume down because -- surprise! -- I can't stand the Winehouse! But I wanted to to see if was true that they had censored her tattoos for the American audience (she has one of a naked lady on her arm, and I read somewhere that they had put, like, a bikini top on her!). I couldn't quite work it out, though...

Tweetey, she has so much attention on her this new singer...the paparazi follow her around and the tabloids go crazy. she seems to live like a regular ol rock star...maybe it's because she is so young and female...but they are very harsh on her. Mister Anchovy is always posting the crazy headlines about her...so I thought he might enjoy this clip. At first I thought the tabloid attention was weird...but I didn't realize shewas British...ah then it all made sense the British tabloids are murderous to their pop stars!

Red, I can see she isn't your style of music, not everyone likes jazz......I think she interesting because she is a jazz singer. I mean...to have a jazz singer be in the top of popular music is just stunning to me and quite charming! This year at the Grammy's Herbie Hancock won best album...and he said...it's been 40 years since Jazz has been in the Grammy's and winning. This year he and Winehouse had so many nominations and awards...it really warmed my heart that Jazz is having a rebirth. I am really glad to see that jazz and rhythym and blues are being adopted into so many new records coming out...and young people are responding and loving the rebirth of jazz/blues!

(plus...my god...the charisma of Winehouse is amazing...how she moves her body, her gestures...it's like time travel magic...like jazz music or not...she has something really special about her energy....)

She's great and a real pro in spite of her over-fun personal life, and I agree about the back up singers.

I want to marry all of them.

Oh totally L.M. can you handle those back up singers? I just know they would LOVE you!

You see....Amy is a true femme fatale goddess...again it's aside from whether you like Jazz or not or her singing and music...

it's much more than that. she is a dangerous goddess band that is why she is followed around and analyzed. People are afraid of the power she has over young girls, and over our strict societal rules.

Tabloids reflect the mechanism of "gossip" and "tabboo" in our culture. Gossip is a way of letting each other know what is against the rules and what is taboo. Amy Winehouse threatens stiff convential society and sexual repression.

She grabs her crotch in the most personal and private way...not overt like Elvis shaking or Michael Jackson grabbing his package...she is doing it like she needs to...and her fairly standard party life and tats...which most people live by especially rock stars is a source of judgement...when there are tons of men who do the same thing as Winehouse...but don't have the stalkers (oh I mean media).

No it is much more dangerous when a woman is being herself and living a wild life than a man...

Hey by the way wasn't her mum cute? And that was her dad who jumped on stage to hug her too...

What has the media to say about her close relationship with her parents huh?

i like her okay... but her life makes me really sad. i know the tabloids are ridiculously cruel... but the girl has got to get her act together. i've read articles in which her parents plead with fans to stop listening to her in hopes that it might wake her up to get help and get off the drugs.

i imagine she'd be all the more impressive if she got off the stuff.

Well, well, well. Although I have made a bunch of posts down the block at my place about Amy, it never would have occurred to me to post a clip of her singing. Let me say that she does have a heaping helping of personal charisma. I wouldn't call her a jazz singer exactly. She's more like a revisionist soul singer, and as you know, I've good with the revisionist musicians. That said, we have her last CD, the one with the hit on it, and I have to say I can hardly listen to it. There are about two really good songs and to me the rest come across as mediocre material. Maybe she can bring them to life live, when she's on her game. The trouble with being revisionist is that you have to compete with the first wave, and if you're reviving soul, some of that wave are still kicking. Maybe Aretha is pissed because Beyonce thinks Tina is the Queen of Soul, but I don't think Aretha's worried about young Amy just yet. What fascinates me about Ms. Winehouse is the way her messed up personal life so perfectly feeds the "star-making machinery behind the popular song". And of course we all like watching personal tragedy. She must have a great PR team, and with the song Rehab, all the pieces fell into place for the big sell. Of course life imitates art or whatever that saying is, and maybe the hype about her rampant drug use is even more poignant because of her real rampant drug use. She certainly gives the entertainment writers something to write about, any day. Need a story! What's Amy up to? Has she been on Oprah yet?
